Book Review: “Signs, Words & Gestures” by Balthasar Fischer

by PastorMinton on February 2nd, 2015

“Signs, Words & Gestures” is a short book written to answer the question, “Why do we do ______ in church?”

Fr. Fischer goes through thirty worship symbols in the liturgy and divides them among his audience. Twenty are written for adults and ten for children. Each is presented in a short homily (2-4 pages in length each).

The book is a very quick and insightful read. Although Fr. Fischer writes strictly from the Roman Rite (especially as it was a decade or so after Vatican II), it is a good refresher for Chrsitians in a liturgical setting. It can also serve as a good primer for those coming into a liturgical church from a non-liturgical background.
