Prophet Summary: Jonah 3-4

by PastorWilliams on December 31st, 2016

These chapters describe Jonah’s obedient preaching in Nineveh and the entire city’s repentance in the face of total and utter destruction. Jonah’s simple, direct, eight-word sermon brought the entire city of more than 120,000 to its knees before the Creator of the universe.

However, Jonah brooded over Nineveh’s salvation because he wanted to see the city destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah. When God showed mercy to the pagan city, Jonah complained to God that His mercy was the reason why he didn’t want to preach to Nineveh in the first place. Jonah knew God would spare the city if they repented. Jonah wanted the city destroyed because they were Israel’s enemies.

Jonah’s story shows us God’s penchant for giving multiple chances to the people He wants to do His will. He has definite plans for every Christian for the expansion of His kingdom. However, our sinful natures get in the way of doing God’s will so that we must pray “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”
