Ramadan 11

Today’s Text: Sura 9.94-10.109 (, pages 108-118)

Sura 9, Tauba (“Repentance”)

In the last quarter of this Sura, Allah speaks about the Arabs surrounding Mohamed and his followers. Allah calls the desert Arabs “the worst in unbelief and hypocrisy” (9.97). Allah considered them the worst people to be considered for faithful Muslims. But what are the most prominent images of Muslims today? Arabs in the desert regions of the Middle East, especially in the Arabian peninsula.

The Arabs in Mecca were the reason Mohamed had to flee to Medina. They were also the ones who forced refugees go to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 615. These refugees have a special place in Allah’s Gardens because they were willing to forsake their homes for their faith in Allah (8.74-75; 9.100).

Sura 10, Yunus (“Jonah”)

This Sura is named after the prophet Jonah, but Jonah is only mentioned in verse 98. Mohamed retells the basic accounts from the Old Testament. Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days (10.3; Genesis 1). Noah preached to the people of his time, but he and his family were the only ones saved in the Ark (10.71-73; Genesis 6-9). Moses and Aaron were sent to Egypt to rescue the Israelites (10.75-94; Exodus 3-15). These accounts are similar to the Bible.

Through these accounts, Mohamed illustrates that the Qur’an is Allah’s final revelation. “It is a confirmation of (revelations) that went before it, and a fuller explanation of the Book—wherein there is no doubt—from the Lord of the Worlds” (10.37). It is given so that all might believe and be converted to true faith in Allah. This conversion can only come through Allah’s will (10.100). There is no other ransom available for a sinful man’s soul (10.54-56).

To show Allah’s grace and good will, Nineveh is set forward as an example. They are referred to as the “People of Jonah.” It is the only city where Allah has sent a Messenger where everyone converted (10.98). Conversion is all up to Allah.
