Ramadan 20

Today’s Text: Sura 27.36-29.45 (, pages 206-217)

Sura 27, “al-Namal” (The Ants)

On Judgment Day, Allah will come with the sound of the trumpet. He will separate those who he is pleased to exempt from those he chooses to condemn (27.87; cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

Sura 28, “al-Qasas” (The Narration)

The narration in this Sura reviews Moses’ early history as found in Exodus 1-4. There are two major difficulties in this narration.

First, Mohamed has Pharaoh and Haman together in power (28.6). Haman was Artaxerxes’ second-in-command in Persia (Esther 3:1). The Pharaoh who enslaved the Israelites and Haman lived over a thousand years apart. It is one of the great disconnects in the Qur’an as regards biblical history. Islam takes the stance that the events in the Bible aren’t necessarily historical.

Second, it was Pharaoh’s wife and not his daughter who found baby Moses and sought to adopt him (28.9; cf. Exodus 2:5-10). This is on par with the Virgin Mary being the sister of Moses and Aaron (19.28).

Sura 29, “al-Ankabut” (The Spider)

This Sura is named after the parable of the spider in verse 41. Allah spoke against everyone who relies on their own works or other gods. “The flimiest of houses is the spider’s house.”
